ARCHITECTURAL FRAGMENTS
NOTES I

Notes I, July 2026

I. Architecture

Form, material, proportion and construction generate spatial order.
Architecture exists not only as building or envelope.
Built form is a trace of culture.
Its envelope becomes the carrier of further traces.

II. The Autonomous Object

Architectural principles condense into fragments.
The works are neither buildings in the immediate sense nor purely functional objects.
Their scale is not fixed.
A fragment is as large as it is.
It can exist autonomously or become an element within a larger context.
As a table leg.
As a column.
As part of a larger architectural constellation.
Its role changes with its context.
This context has no definitive form.
It continually re-emerges through spatial constellations, functional connections and site-specific situations.
Object, space and viewer create a place.

III. Place

A place requires no fixed scale.
Where an object begins to order space and establish relationships, a place emerges.
Architecture begins there.

IV. The Fragment

A fragment does not have to be a remnant.
It can be complete.
It can stand alone.
It can become part of a larger context.
And it can detach itself from that context again.
A single column.
The same column as part of a temple.
The fragment is not a fixed state.
It is a possibility.

V. Constellations

The order remains open.
New constellations alter meaning.
A fragment remains the same.
Its relationships change.
Constellations can be fixed.
The system cannot.

VI. Function

Function is one possible manifestation.
Not the point of departure.
An object can be used.
Its presence is not exhausted by use.

VII. Surface

Reliefs, engravings and graphic structures appear as inscriptions of a language.
Their context remains open.
Not clearly legible.
But perceptible.

VIII. Resonance

The works cannot be assigned to a particular time or culture.
They can create the impression of belonging to an order whose origin, time and context remain open.
Cultural meaning emerges at the place.

IX. Language

Architectural Fragments is an open body of work.
An ongoing language.
Each work expands its vocabulary.
